Heritage is one of the key elements of the Creative Exchange, where we use the arts to explore local histories, personal stories, and cultural identities. Through creative projects, we bring communities together to uncover and celebrate shared experiences, ensuring that voices from the past and present shape the future. By working with local people, schools, and community groups, we create meaningful connections that honour and preserve the rich heritage of the places we work in.
Curious Garden - 12th July 2025
In July, Baronial Gardens was transformed into a world of wonder as Curious Garden brought history, creativity, and community together for a one-day celebration. Inspired by the famed Rosherville Pleasure Gardens of Victorian Northfleet, the event reimagined this historic destination with a whimsical steampunk twist—blending live performance, art, and heritage for all ages.
Audiences enjoyed circus acts, live music, dance, walkabout characters, and large-scale puppetry, with Rosie the Bear quickly becoming a crowd favourite. Families got hands-on with interactive workshops, from steampunk crafts to giant collaborative builds, while local schools showcased artworks inspired by Rosherville’s past. Guided tours with local historians added depth, bringing hidden stories of the gardens to life.
At the heart of Curious Garden was community. Our Youth Advisory Board co-created the event’s concept, designed costumes, and even performed as characters throughout the gardens. Collaborations with local schools and artists ensured that Northfleet’s history was reinterpreted in fresh, exciting ways—connecting past and present through creativity.
The day welcomed hundreds of visitors from across the borough and beyond, all gathering to experience a joyful blend of performance, imagination, and heritage. We’re hugely grateful to our funders, partners, and community collaborators for making Curious Garden possible—and to every family, friend, and neighbour who joined us for a truly unforgettable day.
Layers of Life
Our Layers of Life project explores the deep connections, histories, and personal journeys that shape Northfleet. Working with Northfleet Veterans Club and local primary schools like Lawn Primary, we gather and share stories through creative activities, fostering intergenerational connections and celebrating the area’s rich heritage.
Local artist Sonnia Montes has been working with these groups to uncover their stories and explore how the people of Northfleets’ journeys intersect and intertwine. We will be exhibiting these creations soon so check back for details!
