First light projects

First Light (now Into Film) is part of the BFI, investing in educating children and young people through film. Sadly Into Film no longer fund these projects but are still going strong as a national support organisation for ‘Film Clubs’ in schools and youth organisations.

We received funding over a number of years to make short films with children and young people, from disadvantaged backgrounds, across Lincolnshire. The aim of our First Light projects was to engage and empower children and young people to create their own short films, taking technical, managerial and creative control and tell their owns stories in their own voice.

We also worked with Shooting Fish Theatre Company and provided technical support for their First Light projects. One of these films, Broken Sleep (developed with young people in care) won a prestigious First Light Award, for Best Drama. The young people, accepted their award at a celebrity studded event and were over the moon about their win.

Roger Golby – Director of Hustle, BBC, said, “a brilliant short film, really mature, inventive, atmospheric and scary.”
